TABLE 3-1: Vaccine Recommendations for Patients with HIV

T r a v e l - r e l a t e d   v a c c i n e s
 Polio (4) & typhoid (6) Use inactivated (killed vaccine).
 MMR If CD4 very low + travel to measles endemic – use immune globulin
 Yellow fever (5) Live virus vaccine; safety with HIV is uncertain, especially with low CD4 count; may need vaccine waiver letter. May be safe with high CD4 count.
 Influenza Southern hemisphere travel – flu season is April-Sept

Live virus vaccines that are contraindicated:

1) Live attenuated influenza virus (FluMist)

2) Zoster vaccine

3) Vaccinia (except with smallpox exposure

4) Live oral polio vaccine

5) Yellow fever vaccine

6) Typhoid ty21a vaccine
